A Guide To Passing The HGV Driving Test

After all of the instruction and preparation, both in the classroom and behind the wheel, the HGV candidate must still pass a test in order to be licenced as a professional driver. Passing the test is not necessarily easy. It requires concentration, calmness, and confidence in the training and information one has received. The good news is that students who train with Craig Baker Driver Training make us proud with a pass rate in excess of 92%. You can pass the HGV test as well with the right kind of training and support. Craig Baker Driver Training can provide both. We make it our mission to walk each of our students through the entire process from start to finish, ensuring they pass their tests the first time so they can get right to work

The Driver CPC Modules

Module 1A & 1B

The first part of the theory test is a 100-question multiple-choice exam testing the candidate’s knowledge of general highway safety and driving practices. It is similar to the theory test taken for a car licence but modified to account for the unique nature of HGV driving.

  1. The second part of the theory test involves hazard perception. Candidates are shown 19 videos with 20 potential hazards to look for. There are 100 questions the student must answer relating to the information gleaned from the videos.

A passing grade for part one is 85%; a passing grade for part two is 67%. Only when a candidate has passed both portions of the test can he or she then go on to practical skills training. Candidates can take the individual parts as many times as necessary in order to pass them.

Module 2 (CPC Case Studies)

Conducted at the theory test centre you have 90 minutes available in which to complete the test. It is a computer-based exercise with questions covering seven different case studies, all based on real-life situations, which you may encounter as a professional LGV driver or PCV driver.

The test checks that you are able to put the knowledge you have gained from your multiple choice theory tests into practice. Each of the seven case studies contains six to eight questions, with a minimum pass mark of 40 out of 50.

Module 3A & 3B

The HGV driving test now consists of 2 parts the CPC Module 3A (HGV reverse & uncoupling) & the CPC Module 3B (on-road) practical driving test. Craig Baker Driver Training is a DVSA-approved 3A exam centre we have an approved reversing area in Charnock Richard, Chorley, where we carry out all training and testing. If you book an LGV training course with Craig Baker Driver Training the 3A training and test will be included in your course price. If you would like to come along just for a 3A reversing test we can also accommodate this.

Module 4 (CPC Practical Demonstration)

If you are training to become an HGV driver you will also need an initial CPC (certificate of professional competence) this is initially two tests one theory-based (CPC Module 2) and the other is a practical demonstration test (CPC Module 4), for this test you need to be able to show the examiner your knowledge and confidence in being able to handle a large goods vehicle, you will be asked questions related to vehicle safety and you will need to demonstrate each answer.

The Keys To Success

Information:

To successfully navigate the HGV driving test in the UK, a comprehensive understanding of the process is crucial. Begin by researching the specific requirements and regulations outlined by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). Familiarize yourself with the different categories of HGV licenses and the corresponding vehicles they permit you to operate. Additionally, stay updated on any recent changes in legislation or testing procedures. A well-informed approach is the foundation for a confident and effective preparation.

Training:

Investing in professional HGV training is a key component of your preparation. Enroll in a reputable training program that covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of HGV driving. Look for accredited training providers that adhere to DVSA guidelines. Practical training should include hands-on experience with the specific type of HGV you'll be tested on. Emphasize the importance of a structured curriculum that addresses not just the test requirements but also real-world scenarios drivers may encounter on the road.

Practice:

Practice is the linchpin of HGV test success. Regularly engage in both theoretical and practical practice sessions to reinforce your understanding and skills. Use mock theory tests to assess your knowledge of traffic rules, signs, and safety regulations. For practical skills, spend ample time behind the wheel, simulating test conditions. Focus on mastering maneuvers like reversing, coupling, and uncoupling trailers. The more you practice, the more comfortable and capable you'll become, translating into a smoother performance during the actual test.

Confidence:

Confidence is the intangible quality that can elevate your performance on test day. Bolster your self-assurance by consistently meeting and exceeding practice benchmarks. Positive self-talk and visualization can also help build confidence. Remind yourself of your progress and capabilities, and approach the test with a mindset that exudes assurance. Confidence not only affects your driving skills but also how you handle test-related challenges, such as answering questions from the examiner.

Calmness:

Maintaining a calm demeanor is paramount during the HGV driving test. Nervousness can negatively impact your decision-making and execution of driving tasks. Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, to manage stress. Arrive at the test center well-prepared and give yourself ample time to acclimate to the testing environment. Remember that the examiner expects a certain level of nervousness and focus on demonstrating your competence. A calm and composed approach enhances your ability to make sound judgments and showcase your driving proficiency.

Incorporating these elements into your HGV driving test preparation will not only enhance your chances of success but also contribute to your long-term competence as a professional driver. Stay informed, invest in quality training, practice diligently, cultivate confidence, and approach the test with a calm and collected mindset for a successful HGV driving test experience in the UK.
