Most people don't realise you can go straight to a Class 1 (Cat CE) licence without first getting a Class 2 (Cat C). Our direct access Cat CE course removes that extra step, saving you time and money.
You'll train directly on articulated lorries with our experienced instructors, covering everything from vehicle safety checks to motorway driving - and be fully prepared for the DVSA practical test.
Ideal for: career changers, those upgrading from a car or van licence, and anyone looking for the fastest legal route to a Class 1 HGV licence.
How to Get Your HGV Class 1 (Cat CE) Licence - Step by Step
Step 1 — Medical Examination
You'll need to pass a DVSA-standard medical (D4 form, completed by a doctor) to confirm you're fit to drive an HGV. Required on application, then every 5 years from age 45, and annually from age 65.
Step 2 — Apply for Your Provisional HGV Licence
Complete the D2 and D4 forms with DVLA. You must already hold a full UK car licence.
Step 3 — Pass the HGV Theory Test
The theory test has two parts: multiple choice and hazard perception. Both must be passed before practical training begins. We help you prepare.
Step 4 — Begin Cat CE Practical Training
Your training covers vehicle safety checks, driving technique, manoeuvring, reversing, and road safety — all on modern articulated vehicles. Lessons are tailored to your pace and experience level.
Step 5 — Complete Driver CPC Modules
To drive professionally, you need the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). This includes:
- Module 1a/1b — Theory and hazard perception (case studies)
- Module 2 — Off-road practical demonstration (vehicle safety, loading)
- Module 3 — On-road driving test
- Module 4 — Practical demonstration (in-house at our DVSA-approved centre)
Step 6 — Take the DVSA Practical Test
The test includes a reversing exercise and an on-road assessment of your driving skills, safety awareness, and vehicle control. Our training is designed around exactly what examiners look for.
Step 7 — Receive Your HGV Class 1 (Cat CE) Licence
Pass the practical test and you're licensed to drive articulated vehicles up to 44 tonnes — one of the most in-demand qualifications in UK logistics.
Career Opportunities With a Class 1 HGV Licence
The UK has a sustained shortage of qualified Class 1 HGV drivers, meaning strong demand, competitive pay, and job security across multiple sectors. We GUARANTEE you a job interview with one of the UK's biggest agencies, when you gain your Class 1 licence.
With a Cat CE licence you can work with:
- Major national and international haulage companies
- Retail and supermarket distribution networks
- Construction and plant logistics firms
- Temperature-controlled and specialist freight operators
- Container and port logistics
Starting salaries typically range from £38,000-£48,000, with experienced drivers and owner-operators earning significantly more. Flexible shift patterns, regional and long-haul routes, and agency work options give you genuine control over how and where you work.
