Common Questions Learners Ask About the HGV 3B Test

If you're preparing for your 3b practical HGV driving test, you probably have a few questions. At Craig Baker Driver Training, we hear many of the same ones from our learners — so here’s a quick guide to help you feel more confident and prepared before you get behind the wheel.

1. How long does the 3b driving test last?

Your 3b practical test lasts a minimum of one hour. This includes your on-road driving assessment, where you’ll demonstrate safe driving, awareness, and decision-making in various traffic situations.

2. How many minors can I get on my 3b test?

You're allowed up to 12 driver faults (minors).
If you receive 1 serious or dangerous fault, however, that will result in a test failure.

So, while a few small mistakes are okay, staying consistent and calm is key to passing first time.

3. Will I have to parallel park like I did on my car test?

No parallel parking is required during the 3b HGV test.

Instead, you'll carry out a series of basic driving exercises, which typically include:

  • Pulling up on the left in a safe, convenient, and legal position (SCALP)

  • A controlled stop

  • Incline and decline starts

  • An angled start

  • A self-selected pull-up on the left

These manoeuvres are designed to test your control, awareness, and ability to position the vehicle safely — not your parking skills.

4. Do I need to use the park brake every time I stop?

Not always. You don’t have to apply the park brake every time you stop.

However, it’s good practice to apply it if:

  • There’s a risk of the vehicle rolling

  • You’re likely to be stationary for more than a few seconds

Use your judgment — safety and control always come first.

5. Can I flash my headlights to let others out of a junction?

No, you should not flash your headlights to signal others.
This is a common habit among UK drivers, but it's against the rules of the road.

According to the Highway Code (Rule 110)Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.

You can accept a headlight flash from another driver only if it’s clearly safe and appropriate to proceed — but you should never initiate a flash to let someone out.
