At Craig Baker Driver Training, safety is at the very core of everything we deliver. Every training session we run is designed not just to help learners pass a test, but to equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe and responsible on the road. Today’s classroom training focused on one of the most serious – yet entirely avoidable – issues in the haulage industry: bridge strikes.
Bridge strikes remain a major risk on UK roads, often leading to road closures, damage to infrastructure, rail service delays, insurance claims, and, most importantly, risk to life. With Network Rail reporting hundreds of bridge strikes every year, it’s vital that all professional drivers understand how to reduce and eliminate this risk entirely.
Knowing the height of your vehicle is the first step to preventing a bridge strike. During training, learners were shown how to accurately measure from the ground to the absolute highest fixed point on the HGV — whether that’s a roof-mounted air deflector, refrigeration unit, or stacked cargo. Understanding that a vehicle’s height may change depending on load or trailer type is also essential. By mastering this skill, drivers become far more confident and capable in assessing route suitability and height clearances before setting off.
Once the correct height is measured, it must be clearly displayed inside the cab using the in-built height indicator. This quick reference point is a legal requirement and an essential tool when approaching bridges or low-clearance structures. Our instructors showed learners how to set the height correctly and reminded them of the importance of resetting it if the trailer is swapped. Failing to update the indicator after a change in load can have dangerous consequences, so regular checks and updates become part of the driver’s daily routine.
We spent the majority of the session discussing how to avoid bridge strikes altogether. This includes planning routes using HGV-friendly navigation systems, understanding and recognising bridge signage, developing strong situational awareness, avoiding distractions and remaining alert to changes in road layout or diversions, and following company policies on route risk assessment and vehicle checks. We also looked at real-world examples and discussed how simple errors led to serious outcomes — reinforcing how bridge strikes are avoidable with the right mindset and preparation.
At Craig Baker Driver Training, we’re not just ticking boxes. We’re building career-ready drivers who have the safety of themselves and others front of mind. Bridge strikes are more than just a training module – they’re a matter of national safety and professionalism within the transport sector.
By covering this topic thoroughly, we ensure our trainees understand the legal consequences of causing a bridge strike, the reputational and financial damage to themselves and their employer, and how they can be part of a safer, more reliable logistics network.
We are proud to support new and existing drivers in achieving a high standard of competence and confidence on the road. Our training goes beyond the test, focusing on real-world skills, road safety, and long-term success in the transport industry.
