HGV Medical D4 Assessment in Wigan
Do I need a HGV / PCV medical before I can drive a HGV in Wigan?
Before you can start HGV training to obtain your HGV / LGV licence or to renew your existing licence, you must undertake a D4 medical, that’s completed by a GMC (General Medical Council) registered doctor. Craig Baker Driver Training has HGV doctors that are specifically trained to provide DVLA medicals near Wigan with short notice and evening/weekend medicals available in the Wigan area.
What’s involved in the HGV driver's D4 medical in Wigan?
During the D4 HGV medical process, you’ll complete a medical history questionnaire and undergo a physical check-up. The examination involves a Snellen chart test for vision and a blood pressure reading in line with DVLA requirements.
Vision assessment: The minimum vision requirement is 6/7.5 in one eye and 6/60 in the other, tested with a 3-metre Snellen chart. If you wear glasses or contacts for driving, bring them and your prescription to the medical evaluation.
Blood pressure check: To meet the DVLA group 2 guidelines, your blood pressure should not regularly exceed 179/99. A systolic reading of 180 or higher, or a diastolic of 100 or above, will prevent you from meeting the standard.
Medical questionnaire: In the medical history section, you will be asked about conditions such as epilepsy, seizures, insulin-dependent diabetes, and other health issues. Proper management of these conditions should not affect your application.
A doctor fills out a D4 form according to the information they have about your medical history, medications, and examination results. Typically, it takes around 15 minutes to complete the process.
How often do I need a D4 HGV driver's medical?
The DVLA requires professional drivers to undergo medical examinations on a regular basis in order to keep their licenses valid. At the beginning of your career, you will need to undergo your first medical examination. Then, after you have reached the age of 45, you will need a medical every five years until you reach the age of 65. As soon as you reach the age of 65, you will be required to undergo a medical examination at least once every year.

How will I know when I need a HGV driver's health check?
You will usually receive a reminder letter, together with a D4 medical form a few weeks before your medical is due. You will also be able to tell when your medical is due according to the expiry date on the back of your HGV licence medical. For renewals, DVLA will also send you renewal paperwork by post 56 days before your licence expiry.
