HGV Medical D4 Assessment in Lancaster
Do I need an HGV medical before I can drive a HGV in Lancaster?
In order to start HGV training in Lancaster to obtain your HGV / LGV licence or to renew your existing licence, The DVLA requires you to undertake a D4 medical, that’s completed by a GMC (General Medical Council) registered doctor. Here at Craig Baker Driver Training, we have a team of HGV medical doctors that are specifically trained to provide DVLA medicals near Lancaster with short notice and evening/weekend medicals available in Lancaster
What’s involved in the HGV driver's D4 medical in Lancaster?
As part of the D4 HGV medical, you’ll need to provide details of your medical history through a questionnaire and take a physical exam. This exam includes an eyesight test using a Snellen chart and a blood pressure check to meet DVLA requirements.
Vision assessment: To qualify, your vision must be at least 6/7.5 in one eye and 6/60 in the other, evaluated with a 3-metre Snellen chart. If you wear corrective lenses or glasses, remember to bring them and your prescription to the medical check.
Blood pressure check: The DVLA group 2 requirements state that your blood pressure must not be higher than 179/99. If your systolic is constantly 180 or above, or your diastolic is 100 or above, you will not meet the criteria.
Medical questionnaire: In the medical history questionnaire, you'll be inquired about issues such as epilepsy, seizures, insulin-treated diabetes, and other health matters. If controlled, certain conditions may not affect your application.
Based on your medical history, medications, and examination results, your doctor will complete your D4 form. The entire process usually takes about 15 minutes.
How often do I need a D4 HGV driver's medical in Lancaster?
The DVLA requires professional drivers to undergo medical examinations at specific intervals in order to maintain their licenses. At the beginning of your career, you will need to have your first HGV medical. After that, from age 45, you’ll need a medical every five years until you reach 65. When you reach the age of 65, you will be required to undergo a medical examination on a yearly basis.

How will I know when I need a HGV driver's health check?
A few weeks before your medical is due, you’ll usually be sent a reminder letter along with a D4 medical form. You can also check the expiry date on the back of your HGV licence medical to determine when it’s due. For licence renewals, the DVLA will post renewal paperwork 56 days before the expiry date.
