You can drive a vehicle over 3500kg but no more than 7500kg with a C1 licence. If you passed your car test before 1997, you will have what is known as the "grandfather's right" and you will be able to drive this vehicle without having to take a test. If you have passed the test after this date, you will need to pass the C1 licence test in order to drive a vehicle that weighs more than 3500kg.
A C1 licence is usually required by paramedics, people driving large horseboxes, motorhomes, or anyone who wishes to become an LGV driver but wishes to start out with smaller vehicles first. The C1 licence allows drivers to operate vehicles with a total weight of 3,500kg, including a trailer of up to 750kg. It also allows drivers to tow a trailer with a total weight of up to 8,250kg.
