A lot of people don't know this but because the gross weight of an ambulance is usually over 3.5ton you can't drive it on your normal licence, a HGV 7.5ton licence is needed, So if you need to drive an ambulance then you will also need to go through the process of obtaining a HGV C1 licence we will explain the steps below.
The DVLA's regulations require you to undergo a medical examination before you are permitted to drive an ambulance in order to ensure that you are physically fit and proper. This medical must include an eye examination and a general physical examination. After these tests are completed, the results are sent to the DVLA for approval. A driver can drive an ambulance once he or she has been approved.
The next step is to prepare for the C1 HGV theory test and the hazard perception test. All study materials will be provided by Craig Baker Driver Training. We can also provide theory test preparation lessons if you need them. When you feel confident, you can book your test at one of the official DVSA test centres. We can help you with this too. After you pass the tests, you'll be ready to start your driving lessons.
After that, you will prepare with our professional instructor for your 3A practical reversing test. We will show you how to reverse and prepare you for your 3B practical on-road test after that. Passing the 3B practical road test leads to the awarding of a C1 driving licence. Now that you have your license, you can begin driving on your own.
Once you have passed the 3B test you will be fully qualified to drive ambulances up to 7.5ton
