A lot of people don't know this but because the gross weight of an ambulance is usually over 3.5ton you can't drive it on your normal licence, a HGV 7.5ton licence is needed, So if you need to drive an ambulance then you will also need to go through the process of obtaining a HGV C1 licence we will explain the steps below.
Medical examinations are required by the DVLA before you can drive an ambulance to ensure your physical fitness. As part of this medical, a general physical examination and an eye examination are required. These tests are approved by the DVLA after they are completed and a provisional C1 licence will be issued
As a next step, you will need to prepare for the C1 HGV theory test and the hazard perception test. A complete set of study materials is provided by Craig Baker Driver Training. Once you have passed the 3B test you will be fully qualified to drive ambulances up to 7.5ton
