The Department for Transport (DfT), in collaboration with the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), has announced a major update to Category B driving licence regulations — and it’s fantastic news for those looking to drive electric vans and similar zero-emission vehicles.
From 10th June 2025, drivers who hold a standard Category B licence (i.e., a regular car licence) will be legally permitted to drive zero-emission vehicles up to 4.25 tonnes, compared to the current 3.5-tonne limit. This means more flexibility for drivers and businesses looking to operate heavier electric vans without the need for additional licence categories.
This increase reflects the growing shift towards electric and alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVs), which often weigh more due to heavy battery systems and alternative propulsion technology. Many zero-emission vans now exceed the traditional 3.5-tonne weight limit, so raising the limit helps align licence regulations with the latest vehicle technology.
Previously, to drive vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on a Category B licence, drivers had to complete AFV (Alternative Fuel Vehicle) training. This training covered safety, handling, and operational differences associated with heavier zero-emission vehicles. From 10th June 2025, AFV training will no longer be required for drivers operating zero-emission vehicles up to 4.25 tonnes.
However, until this date, AFV training remains mandatory for those driving in the 3.5 to 4.25-tonne range.
This regulatory change is part of the UK government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions from road transport. By making it easier for drivers and businesses to use larger zero-emission vehicles, the government hopes to accelerate the adoption of cleaner transport solutions across the country.
