Which Licence Do You Need? A Guide to Licence Categories

If you're considering a career on the road, knowing which driving licence you need is the first step—and it can be confusing! Whether you're aiming to drive a lorry, a bus, or even an ambulance, there's a specific licence category for you. Let’s simplify the process:

HGV Licence (Class 1 & Class 2)

This is for driving Heavy Goods Vehicles like large lorries and articulated trucks.

  • Class 1 (C+E): For the biggest articulated lorries (those with a trailer)

  • Class 2 (Category C): For rigid body lorries (no trailer)

Perfect for anyone interested in logistics, haulage, or long-distance transport.

PCV Licence (Passenger Carrying Vehicle)

If your goal is to drive buses, coaches, or minibuses, this is the licence for you.

  • Often required for public transport, tour companies, and school transport roles.

  • Includes both D and D1 categories depending on vehicle size and passenger numbers.

C1 Licence

The C1 licence is ideal for those wanting to drive smaller trucks and ambulances.

  • Typically required for NHS ambulance roles or smaller commercial delivery vehicles.

  • Covers vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes.
